Moles can be removed for cosmetic reasons or because they can potentially develop into skin cancer. Most unwanted moles are surgically removed, but it is also possible to make an excision, a technique called shaving, in which a kind of superficial scraping of the mole is performed and, in this case, there is no need for stitches after the procedure.
Ideally, everyone should have moles evaluated once a year, and those at increased risk for skin cancer should undergo body mapping. Any new mole or one that has changed its shape, color, size or thickness should be evaluated by your doctor.
